Revolution Tournament Results
November 19th, 2008Christine, Todd and Todd!!! What can I say? Congrats!!! It’s been a long time coming. You guys looked awesome at the tournament and I’m not surprised at all by your promotions. Christine, that gold medal will look great against that blue belt!
Kindra. I was very impressed with your poise and technique in your matches. Your gameplan was clear and you executed brilliantly. Congrats on your Silver and your Bronze. I was also impressed with your conditioning. All that hard work is really paying off. I was able to take a few minutes and watch most of your matches, so they really stand out for me.
And to everyone else, while I’m not at all surprised at your golds, silvers and bronzes, I’m very proud.
Don’t forget, if you’re looking for BJJ gear, check out Razorback Jiu Jitsu. Douglas sells the full range of Atama gear, including the Mundial #7, and if you use the coupon code “STEVE” you’ll save 15% off of your offer.

Convocation of Combat Arts
November 19th, 2008I mentioned in my 2nd anniversary in BJJ post that one of the things I’ve come to really enjoy over the last year is the sense of community, and how I value the online community, as well as the local BJJ scene.
Over a year ago, Nathan Teodoro of TDA Training started up a Google Group for martial arts bloggers and blog readers. This group has grown over time to the point that Nathan went out and found a new host. He has recently launched the new platform for The Convocation of Combat Arts.
I enjoy it because the guys are practical in their advice, regardless of their style. There’s very little in the way of ego or pretension and all there are welcoming of diverse points of view. Nathan describes it as “a place where we could discuss amongst ourselves, and with our reader, the issues of the martial day in a civil, mature way, without gratuitous, and anonymous personal attacks or unjustified opinions.”In addition to the main forums, there are groups specializing in Judo, Taekwondo, Karate, Kobudu, Aikido, Kung Fu, Boxing, BJJ, MMA and much more.”
So, check it out if you have a minute. I noticed that Slideyfoot is already a member!

Need Of Hand Wraps
November 19th, 2008Need Of Hand Wraps was written by Shiji Shijina from proboxinggear.com
Boxing is a sport where there is an immense requirement of heavy training in order to perform effectively. In a profession like boxing there is immense requirement that the boxers take extra care while they are in the ring. Boxing is considered to be an exercise that acts as a stress buster; it also boosts confidence in case of a dominating position against the opponent. It is highly important in a sport like boxing that you take extra care and if this is ignored then things can become horribly bad.
It is quite common that in the effort of taking precautions from getting injured many boxers use hand wraps on their fist. The most important tool of a boxer in the ring is his fist and it is very much necessary that there are precautions taken to protect the fist. These wraps on their hands helps them to prevent bone injuries by splinting the fragile and delicate bones but they also help in the prevention of injuries on the surface of the skin. These skin damages results in causing infection or damage in the future. Hence these Hand wraps are worn to prevent these minor injuries which in later can turn to be serious issues in the future.
A question may arise that a boxing glove quite thick enough can easily serve the purpose, then what is the need of a hand wrap. A boxing glove though thick enough and it gives protection to the knuckles and bones but it cannot absorb the force of the blow. The usage of these hand wraps provides the bones with firmness and strength to the fragile bones. It also acts as a support to the wrist as well as the thumbs; it also protects the twists and turns which may arise in case a punch by the opponent is given at a wrong angle. It also provides resistance to the glove.
A way in which wrapping is done is taping the hands. This you might have seen in many movies. The major logic behind this could be understood if you have examined the doctors taping the hand if you have a fractured hand as the bones can be aligned and such that they can heal. Hence the taping on the hands is done to maintain firmness in the bones and thereby protect them from injury.
When you buy your boxing gloves or any other boxing equipment for that reason you must consider what kind of activity you would be doing:
- If you go with warlike arts where you require use of your hands then go with more flexible glove.
- If it is for purpose of hitting heavy bags and mitts you would want defense on the front end of your glove - go with thicker padding.
- If you desire to go with training in the ring then buy heavier glove.
In case you are hitting speed bags, twofold end bags or something lighter you could purchase bag gloves just for that reason and might find boxing gloves too bulky.
If you are challenging in the ring you would need a lighter glove.
